Background:

Stonehedge is located at 406 East Shadburn Avenue, Buford, Georgia 30518.

Kate Allen Shadburn and Wylie Burl Shadburn built Stonehedge between 1903 and 1904. Kate was Mr. Bona Allen's only daughter. Bona Allen operated a tannery in Buford and was Buford's number one citizen. Burl operated the Shadburn Bank in downtown Buford (now Peoples Bank and Trust) and his family operated a ferry across the Chattahoochee River.

Stonehedge gets its name from the low stone wall that runs along Shadburn Avenue and Fifth Street. The interior boasts many fine architectural features. The foyer and dining room are in the Arts and Crafts style. The dining room has a landscape mural painted on the plaster wall above the oak paneling, a coved ceiling, built in oak buffet, and a magnificent chandelier. A beautiful set of stained glass windows sits high above the stairwell landing. The window design features bright red poppies, and at sunset, the colorful stained glass casts jewel tones on the oak paneling in the foyer below.

The grounds boast beautiful gardens with perennial flower beds and rose arbors. There are two state champion trees on the property, recorded by the forestry service as the largest of their kind in Georgia. A large outdoor reception area, surrounded by low stone walls, provides a charming private area for intimate outdoor events.

Maria and Alan Turk have owned Stonehedge since 1998. Maria has worked as a commercial interior designer for 20 years and has been a Georgia Master Gardener since 1993. Stonehedge was open to the public between 1999 and 2010 hosting weddings and other special events. Stonehedge is now a private home again.

Maria continues to use her artistic skills as a wedding calligrapher.
